Virgin is one of those great brands that I always dreamed of working on. Luckily I spent two years at RKCR and got to work on Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Poker and Virgin Money.

Virgin wanted to get in on the online poker craze. As a player myself I made sure I was involved from the planning phase. Many of the existing sites were talking about how many professionals they had on their books or the huge sums of money that could be won. For the new player, this could be intimidating and ultimately off-putting.

Poker is steeped in jargon and slang. We used this to create the humorous executions above. We picked some of the most common but unfathomable expressions for poker starting hands and illustrated them literally before telling the viewer what they really meant, thereby hoping to demystify and democratize the game.

The year after I left, the idea was revisited by the digital agency whose work got into D&AD.
I wrote this cheeky ad for Virgin Money’s life insurance product, aimed at younger audiences on MTV. We wanted to do something funny and irreverent that didn't feel like a commercial for a financial product.

The script features a classic scenario but the client was very brave and thought it was funny. Even with the limited budget Chris Mudge said he'd like to direct it, and we were lucky enough to get Olivia Lee to star in it. At the time she was making her name on 'The 11 O'clock Show' and was keen for the exposure.
